My mother had a beautiful collection of interesting jewellery from her travels around the globe. She kept them all in a little set of Japanese red drawers, and I pillaged this ring out when I was about 18-years-old.
Mum originally found the piece at a market in Guatemala during 1982. The ring leads me to imagine my mum travelling in her 20’s: curly hair, bright red flowy skirt and silver bells… young and free.
An interesting little story is wrapped around the ring — when my parents were travelling back through Mexico, Dad’s bag with all his belongings was stolen off the bus, but my mum’s bag (with all her market finds) was luckily left behind!
I never really take the ring off, but if I’m cooking something hands-on, I put my jewellery on the kitchen windowsill.
I have a small, but growing, collection of interesting art pieces, and would love for the boys to take various pieces into their own homes one day.
